README - WDATA66 PROGRAM SUMMARY: This program searches for and verifies the Ultra ATA/66 capability of specific Western Digital hard drives. If the drive is Ultra ATA/66 capable you can enable or disable this feature with this utility. TO RUN THE PROGRAM: BACK UP DATA: Before running the program, it is recommended that users back up all data for all hard drives. The WDATA66 test does not overwrite any data on the drives and if used properly should not result in data loss, but the regular backing up of data is always recommended. STORE THE PROGRAM ON FLOPPY DRIVE: The program must be run from a floppy drive, so copy the file WDDIAG.EXE to a formatted bootable floppy diskette in A:. ENABLING ULTRA ATA/66 CAPABILITY: All of the following conditions must be met before your system will be able to utilize Ultra ATA/66: 1. Your host system must support Ultra ATA/66 (Motherboard chipset, BIOS or add in Controller Card). 2. A 40 Pin, 80 conductor cable must be attached between the host system and the hard drive. 3. Your operating must be enabled for DMA transfers 4. Your hard drive must support Ultra ATA/66 and this capability must be enabled. START THE PROGRAM: To start the program, type WDATA66 at the DOS prompt, A:\WDATA66. SELECT A DRIVE: You can 'Select a Drive' by using the up/down arrow keys to highlight a specific drive. The utility will tell you if the drives detected are 'capable' of Ultra ATA/66 and if that feature is 'enabled'. Hit enter to select a drive and then type to enable or disable the feature on supported drives. The WDATA66 utility will support and recognize up to 8 hard drives. Enabling or disabling this feature on a selected drive can take up to 30 seconds. When the changes have been performed, the 'enabled' status message will change from "yes" to "no" or vice versa. You can select another drive or hit to exit the utility. In order for the changes to take effect you must cycle power on your computer. A or warm boot/reset WILL NOT make the changes effective.
