1993 TurboTax/1040 for Windows README January 6, 1994 The following topics are included in this ReadMe: * INSTALLATION * TAX INFORMATION * TRANSFERS * IMPORT * SCREEN DISPLAY * PRINTING * ELECTRONIC FILING * 1040PC * CORRECTIONS TO THE MANUAL AND HELP SYSTEM INSTALLATION *****IMPORTANT***** You will need at least 14.5 MB of hard disk space available for a complete installation of TurboTax/1040 for Windows. 1. OS/2 2.1 If you install OS/2 version 2.1 after installing TurboTax/1040 for Windows, you will receive a message stating that fonts are missing when you try to run TurboTax. You will need to re-install TurboTax/1040 for Windows to correct this situation since OS/2 maintains its own WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI files, and they do not contain all the necessary information 2. If you have Prime Solution's Disk Technician Gold software installed on your computer, you may experience difficulty in running ChipSoft's installation utility (Setup.exe). The symptoms are the installation will appear to hang up and you will hear a low pulsating tone. You will not see an error message. This is caused by the device driver DTG_VIR.SYS from Disk Technician Gold that is loaded in the config.sys file. This file runs in the background but is not a TSR. When you hear the tone and the installation appears to hang, Prime Solutions recommends pressing the F7 function key to disable the Virus Detector. This will allow ChipSoft's installation utility to resume and TurboTax will then install properly. The virus detector will remain disabled until you reboot your computer. TAX INFORMATION 1. The list below identifies new features. Please use on-line Tax Help, especially "What's New This Year," to obtain additional information. Deduction Finder TaxGraph Tax History Worksheet Transfer Help Quicken Help 2. All 1993 TurboTax forms, with the exception of Forms 1099-R, W-2, and W-2G, accept only dollar amounts. 3. The IRS no longer accepts the 1040X Payment Voucher. This form has been removed from TurboTax. TRANSFERS 1. Do not use the Update feature in the File Menu for transfers from 1992 1040 to 1993 1040 data files. Use the Transfer option, which is designed for this function. 2. Taxpayer and spouse's middle initial are separate entry fields on the 1993 primary forms. After you convert data from a 1992 file, you must delete any middle initials from the First Name fields and reenter them into the MI fields. 3. City, State, and ZIP Code are separate fields on the 1993 W-2, 1099-R, and 1099-MISC forms, whereas in 1992 there was a single field for City, State, and ZIP Code. The Transfer Option will convert these items into three fields. It is important to verify the success of this transfer, especially if you are filing electronically. IMPORT 1. Intuit has included a patch on the TurboTax disks for those users who will be converting data from a Quicken 2.0 file to a Turbotax file using a DDE link (auto open feature). If you have Quicken 2.0, run QCheck to install the patch prior to using the auto open feature. 2. The Import function from Quicken for Windows does not transfer information to the additional copies of multiple forms provided in TurboTax. You must open the necessary forms and reenter the information. 3. To import tax exchange files created by Managing Your Money for DOS: Within the "Select TXF File for Import" window, choose the "All files (*.*)" option to list filenames, then, Select the MYM-TC.93 file to import. 4. To import tax exchange files created by Checkfree: Within the "Select TXF File for Import" window, choose "All files (*.*)" option to list filenames, then, Select the CFEXPORT.TAX file to import. 5. In Quicken 7.0 for DOS, in order to separate taxpayer and spouse's wages, you must create a new "tax related" category for "Spouse's income " and assign the spouse's income to this new category. The spouse's wages will be attached to W-2 Summary(2). 6. The Import function will transfer each rental property from Quicken to a separate Schedule E. If you have more than one rental property it will be necessary to combine them on the appropriate Schedule E after importing from Quicken. SCREEN DISPLAY 1. This release of TurboTax for Windows incorporates a new feature, the ability to scale the displayed form windows from thumbnail size to 200%. This feature has been developed to enhance the legibility of the forms when displayed at the higher resolutions supported by the monitors available in today's marketplace. To access the Zoom feature, select Zoom from the Window menu, the program will display a sub-menu that has form display sizes ranging from Thumb to 200%. 2. To scroll within a Help Window using the keyboard, press Ctrl + PageUp or Ctrl + PageDown keys. 3. TurboTax for Windows has been optimized for VGA resolution. If you are running in higher resolution modes such as 1024x768 and are using large fonts, some fields and buttons in Interview will not be displayed properly. Either change to small fonts or run TurboTax for Windows in 640x480 VGA mode. 4. If you are using an EGA display or a Hercules Monochrome display, you may experience text over-runs. 5. The Interview text is blackened when using the Windows Plasma Power Saver color setting. 6. The description field for description of capital gain & losses in the Interview allows more characters than will print on Schedule D. Entering too many characters in this field will cause a text overrun when the form is printed. PRINTING 1. Be sure to use the latest versions of print drivers available for your printer: If you are using a HP 4 printer, use the HPPCL5E.DRV If you are using a HP 3 printer, use the HPPCL5MS.DRV 2. If you are using a color printer, you will need to set "print color" to "Black & White" in the Printer Setup Dialog. 3. WinPrinter 800. The WinPrinter spooler fails to print some pages. Printing at 300 or 400 dpi will correct this problem. *****Important***** You may experience printing problems with HP III or Okidata 800 printers if you are using the printer driver that ships with Microsoft Windows 3.1. The name of this driver is HPPCL5a.drv. We recommend you update your driver to HPPCL5ms.drv which we have included with TurboTax for Windows. This driver is installed by completing the steps outlined below. We expect most problems will disappear when this driver is used. Note, the Okidata printers should be set to HP Emulation mode if the HPPCL5ms.drv driver is used. Information on how to select HP Emulation mode can be found in the Okidata Users Manual. Steps 1. Exit TurboTax (if it is active.) 2. In the Main group of the Program Manager, choose the Control Panel icon. 3. In Control Panel, choose the Printers icon. The Printers dialog box appears. If you installed printer drivers before, the dialog box shows the default printer and a list of installed printers. Proceed to step 4. If you have never installed a printer, the dialog box expands to display a list of printers and the Add button is unavailable. You should proceed to step 6. 4. Choose the Add button. The dialog box expands to display the List Of Printers. 5. In the List Of Printers box, select Install Unlisted or Updated Printer. 6. Click the Install button. A dialog box appears, instructing you to insert the disk that has the printer driver on it. 7. The revised driver, HPPCL5ms.drv, is in the TurboTax for Windows directory so it is not necessary to insert a disk. Instead, type in the TurboTax/1040 for Windows directory. This will be c:\TAX93 if you used the default directory during installation. Then click the OK button. Another dialog box appears listing several printers. 8. In the Add Unlisted or Updated Printer box, select the printer you want and then click OK. For Okidata printers select HP III. 9. The Printers dialog box appears. Your printer is listed in the Installed Printers list. 10. Click the Close button. 11. Restart TurboTax/1040 for Windows. ELECTRONIC FILING Steps for Electronic Filing: 1. The Electronic Filing option on the File menu allows you to convert your data file in preparation for Electronic Filing. In order to select the Electronic Filing option from the File menu you must save and close all data files. 2. When you select Electronic Filing, the TurboTax Electronic Filing Conversion program opens a new window with a single File menu. Open the File menu and click on the Electronic Filing Conversion option. 3. Use the standard file selection window which appears to locate and select the file you want to convert; you may convert as many files as you like but you can only convert one at a time. 4. The TurboTax file conversion will check your return for Electronic Filing eligibility. If your return passes the checks, you can proceed with Electronic Filing Transmission. If your return fails the checks, you may need to modify the return in TurboTax and try again. Not all files are eligible for electronic filing - check the Electronic Filing chapter of your TurboTax manual to see if you are eligible. 5. After your return passes the conversion checks, choose How to File Electronically on the file menu to review the steps for Electronic Filing Transmission. After reviewing this information, you can access the Electronic Filing Transmission icon in your ChipSoft Applications Group. 1040PC If you are using an HP 4L or 4ML printer you will need to select the HP IIIP driver from the Printers Control Panel before printing a 1040PC form. The 4L and 4ML drivers print graphic lines incorrectly. The IIIP driver will correct this problem. CORRECTIONS TO THE MANUAL AND HELP SYSTEM 1. The UNLINK and RELINK options are not available. Please disregard the section "Unlinking and Relinking Itemizations" that appears on page 37 of the Manual. 2. On page 5, the manual states that the on-line registration card is available through the Help menu. In fact, the registration card is available through the Primary Forms window. 3. An error scan (F7 key) does NOT flag overridden amounts. Please note the following corrections to your manual: - on page 32, delete the last sentence of the note under the heading, "Overriding an Amount." - On page 40, under the heading "Performing an Error Scan," delete the words "or overridden" from the first sentence, and the entire sentence that appears in parentheses in that first paragraph. 4. On page 34, under the heading, "Using Reminder Notes," step 2 should read as follows: "Select the note you want to review and click View." 5. On page 9, the manual incorrectly states that you will be given an option to read the Read1040 file during installation. 6. Electronic bulletin board access is available for 300 - 9600 bps modems.
